I left the college to complete my A levels closer to home in Surrey. I completed them at Reigate Grammar School, then a county school but now a public school after declining to become comprehensive. I moved on to Sir John Cass College in Aldgaye where I gained a BSc Lond degree in Botany & Zoology.
My first job was with a semi-conductor manufacturer as an import clerk, importing products from their plants in Belgium, Italy, the US & Japan.
I moved on to Bristow Helicopters in 1975 as a Customs Liaison Officer, controlling the aircraft spares on site under HM Customs control as non duty paid. This was very exciting as Bristows smuggled a number of aircraft out of Iran when the ayatollah's ceased power.
My next move was to an Italian chemical manufacturer in central London initially in their shipping department, then moving into a customer service role. After 17 years the company had merged with another and relocated their offices away from London to Southampton. I decided to move on.
Moving on was a little more difficult than I had expected, but I was recruited by a chemical distributor in Surrey in 1998 where I remain to this day. My role here has changed over the years and recently I have taken over as samples controller for the several thousand products which the company can offer in the UK and across Europe via other local companies as part of the same Dutch owned group.
While this was going on, I married Alison in 1977 and we had two sons and a daughter. We are now grandparents twice over and hoping our sons will soon settle down and add to that number.
